Container "Kudou" (Akan People, Ghana)

11 x 5 x 5 ″Hand cast of bronze, employing traditional wax method.
This special Kudou container was designed and constructed by the Akan People of the Republic of Ghana. Its lid depicts the scene of a male, cultural elder – possibly a chief – sitting comfortably chaired underneath a sun umbrella. It also features cast, oval ladders for handles on either side and a double set of circular rings at its base. Objects such as these, with its elaborate lid design lid and base ornamentation, were typically affordable only by wealthy merchants and chiefs.
