Ngil Mask (Fang People, Gabon)

32 x 12.5 x 7 ″Hand crafted from hardwood block with kaolin.This mask was designed and constructed by the Fang, an agrarian/hunting people of Gabon. The Fang People used masks in their secret Ngil brotherhood. “Members of this male society wore the Fang mask during the initiation of new members and the persecution of wrongdoers” (Rebirth Africa 2021). Masks such as this were also worn by itinerant troubadours for hunting and punishing sorcerers (Christies’ Catalog 2021).
