Ngil Mask (Fang People, Gabon)

36.5 x 10.5 x 7.5 ″Hand crafted from hardwood block with kaolin.This mask was designed and constructed by the Fang, an agrarian/hunting people of Gabon. The Fang People used masks in their secret Ngil brotherhood. “Members of this male society wore the Fang mask during the initiation of new members ahttps://www.artgalleria.com/app/artworks/672162/edit#tab-notesnd the persecution of wrongdoers” (Rebirth Africa 2021). Masks such as this were also worn by itinerant troubadours for hunting and punishing sorcerers (Christies’ Catalog 2021).
