Description
This striking mid-20th century Levantine wedding chest, collected in Beirut and exquisitely restored by NOA Living’s atelier, exemplifies the enduring refinement and complexity of traditional Middle Eastern craftsmanship. Carved from rich walnut wood and inlaid with natural mother-of-pearl and bone, the chest’s geometric richness and bold composition distinguish it as a masterwork of Damascene inlay tradition.
The design centers around a rare pairing of mirrored teardrop-shaped columns framed by rhythmic, interlocking starbursts, diamonds, and stylized waves. These motifs are deeply embedded in Islamic and Eastern Mediterranean decorative language, representing protection, divine harmony, and the infinite nature of spiritual unity. The composition is framed by serpentine borders—known in Levantine folklore to ward off misfortune—and concentric linear motifs that convey continuity, balance, and sacred geometry.
Geometric abstraction in Islamic art is never merely ornamental; it is spiritual, meditative, and rooted in a search for cosmic order. As such, this chest would have originally served as a bridal dowry chest, a guardian of generational legacy and a vessel of personal memory—its protective motifs invoking both physical and spiritual safeguarding.
NOA Living’s restoration honors the integrity of the original inlay, reassembling missing fragments with authentic period materials, reconditioning the woodwork, and preserving the rich patina that gives the piece its age-earned dignity. As visually arresting as it is culturally significant, this heirloom bridges the sacred and the decorative, offering collectors and design connoisseurs a work of profound symbolism and exquisite craftsmanship.
