Description
This elaborately decorated currency ring originates from the Konda people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and represents one of the most visually intricate forms of traditional African metal currency. Cast in a solid bronze alloy using the lost-wax technique, the object features a tubular circular form adorned with raised knops, scrollwork, and incised geometric and linear motifs—each mark a testament to the artisan’s skill and the object’s symbolic weight.
Unlike the more common open-ended torque forms associated with West African groups such as the Yoruba, this closed, donut-shaped ring is distinctive to Central African traditions. Among the Konda and neighboring peoples, such currency rings were not intended for daily commerce. Rather, they served as prestige objects used in high-value transactions, including dowries, ceremonial exchanges, and inheritance gifts. Their physical weight and complex ornamentation embodied both literal and symbolic wealth.
These currency rings also held an important place in social hierarchy. Possession of one or more signified elevated status and often accompanied a person’s most significant life events, from marriage to burial. On occasion, such rings were displayed publicly or worn on the forearm or around the waist during ceremonies, although their size and rigidity limited such uses.
This example, collected in the early to mid-20th century, remains in excellent condition with an attractive dark brown patina, subtle green oxidation, and clearly legible incised patterns. The combination of tactile sculptural form and cultural narrative renders it a rare and powerful artifact of Central African value systems.
