Description
A masterwork of rhythm and structure, the “Threaded Infinity” Raffia Pillow features a sophisticated lattice motif that speaks to the Kuba Kingdom’s legacy of intellectual design and ceremonial abstraction. Handwoven from raffia palm fiber in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this piece evokes a sense of endless motion—its interlocking pattern creating a continuous visual field reminiscent of infinity knots, symbolizing unbroken lineage, unity, and ancestral memory.
The embroidery forms a mesmerizing grid of hooked linear paths, each one echoing and embracing the next—an intentional metaphor for the interdependence of all things in Kuba cosmology. This motif, known for its bold geometry and optical intensity, was traditionally reserved for garments and cloths of status, used during rituals of initiation and succession. The Kuba understanding of pattern was not aesthetic alone, but philosophical: each variation was a dialogue between the individual and the collective, between symmetry and freedom.
Woven by Kuba men on narrow-strip looms and embroidered by Kuba women using looping stitch techniques passed down through matrilineal lines, this textile is a work of both labor and legacy. The deep black and soft ivory hues are achieved through natural dyes extracted from tree bark and fermented botanicals, grounding the piece in the rich ecology of the Kasai region.
Reimagined by NOA Living as a decorative cushion, “Threaded Infinity” brings museum-quality craft into the intimate space of the home. With its strong visual geometry and refined monochromatic palette, it serves as both a design anchor and a cultural artifact—perfect for collectors, curators, and lovers of storied minimalism.
