Description
A powerful convergence of Kuba textile mastery, the “Patterned Lineage” Raffia Pillow is a meticulously assembled patchwork that draws upon the visual language and ritual heritage of the Kuba Kingdom in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Featuring a vibrant interplay between embroidered ikula (nested diamond) and interlace motifs, this pillow stands as a tactile archive of memory, prestige, and symbolic geometry.
Each panel is sourced from original handwoven raffia cloths, created by Kuba men using time-honored single-heddle looms, and later embroidered by women from noble lineages—whose mastery of motif and stitch transforms utilitarian cloth into sacred communication. The ikula diamonds represent vision, continuity, and ancestral guardianship, while the crossed lattice motifs convey ideas of structural integrity, interconnection, and societal harmony. Together, these designs reflect the Kuba worldview that beauty lies not in symmetry alone, but in rhythm, balance, and the dance between complexity and unity.
The palette—burnished ochre, coal black, ivory, and hints of muted indigo—is derived from natural sources, including clay, tree bark, and root-based pigments. This earthy colorway grounds the work in the Kasai region’s fertile terrain while honoring Kuba color symbolism: black for depth and power, yellow for abundance, and white for spiritual clarity.
Historically, such textiles were worn as prestige regalia, gifted in court ceremonies, or used to mark transitions in life and status. The compositional diversity of this patchwork—each fragment once a complete artistic statement—mirrors the Kuba belief in collective identity: multiple voices contributing to a unified whole. The result is not just a pillow, but a living document of cultural expression and generational artistry.
Reinterpreted by NOA Living for the modern collector and design connoisseur, “Patterned Lineage” becomes an object of sculptural elegance and historical depth—perfect for interiors that seek to blend global sophistication with soul.
