Description
With a hypnotic rhythm and a timeless palette, the “Eyes of the Kingdom” Raffia Pillow showcases the Kuba people’s profound mastery of abstract geometry and textile symbolism. Handwoven in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this pillow is adorned with a tightly structured composition of repeating lozenge motifs—each one enclosing a dark central point, symbolizing spiritual vision, protection, and ancestral presence.
These eye-like forms, known in Kuba iconography as ikula, have long represented foresight and inner clarity. Their endless repetition in this textile mirrors Kuba cosmology, where symmetry is respected but variation is celebrated, and where pattern is not merely decorative, but a language of sacred ideas passed down through generations.
The pillow is crafted from raffia palm fibers—harvested, softened, and woven by Kuba men on narrow-strip looms using a single-heddle technique. The embroidery is completed by Kuba women, whose role in translating cultural codes into stitches has long been revered. Here, the restrained palette of natural ivory, bark brown, and matte black is achieved through organic dyes derived from the region’s roots, bark, and minerals—adding both tactility and earthbound elegance to the piece.
Historically, textiles like this were worn by nobility and elders, exchanged during courtly rituals, and laid upon the deceased to guide them into the ancestral realm. Under King Shyaam a-Mbul a-Ngwo in the 17th century, Kuba cloths became markers of intellectual and spiritual depth—each motif a story, each pattern a philosophy.
Reimagined by NOA Living as a luxury accent pillow, “Eyes of the Kingdom” offers a sculptural, meditative element to contemporary interiors. Its linear rhythm, coupled with its deep cultural symbolism, makes it equally suited to curated gallery spaces, minimalist settings, or richly layered homes that honor craftsmanship and history.
