Description
An embodiment of mathematical elegance and ancestral rhythm, the “Royal Grid” Raffia Pillow pays homage to the Kuba Kingdom’s regal textile legacy. Carefully handwoven and embroidered in the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this striking pillow features a continuous interlaced loop motif across its central field, framed by a bold chevron border—a rare composition evoking status, precision, and ceremonial grandeur.
At the heart of this piece lies a repeating pattern of angular interlocking forms that resemble rotating knots or stylized labyrinths. These motifs—often found on elite Kuba wrappers (ntshak)—speak to ideas of unity, protection, and social interconnectedness. Their recursive quality reflects the Kuba worldview: that wisdom is layered, movement is cyclical, and every thread is part of a larger system of meaning.
The fabric is woven from raffia palm fibers using a single-heddle loom by Kuba men, while the embroidery—crafted with meticulous care by Kuba women—is executed through a looping stitch technique that builds both texture and dimensionality. The natural palette of golden ochre and carbon black is derived from fermented botanical and mineral pigments, producing an earthy contrast that is both visually commanding and culturally rooted.
The lower border, embellished with a meticulously woven chevron band, adds structure and balance—symbolizing transition, protection, and the boundary between spiritual and earthly realms. This framing detail enhances the architectural quality of the piece, making it a striking focal point in modern interiors while retaining its ethnographic authenticity.
Reimagined by NOA Living for today’s collector, “Royal Grid” is a sculptural object of design and heritage—perfect for those who value artistry with depth, provenance, and soul.
