Description
A vivid celebration of Kuba ingenuity and regal abstraction, the “Royal Fragmentation” Raffia Pillow presents an extraordinary patchwork composition drawn from multiple vintage textile fragments—each rich with symbolism, rhythm, and ancestral meaning. Expertly assembled in a grid of visual dialogue, this one-of-a-kind cushion is a curated tapestry of motifs historically reserved for the aristocracy of the Kuba Kingdom in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo.
Composed of individually embroidered segments, the pillow juxtaposes four distinct Kuba visual languages: diamond grid ikula motifs signifying continuity and foresight; herringbone-like liyelele chevrons symbolizing protection and thresholds; and checkerboard patterns (nshak) reflecting duality, intellect, and cosmic order. The composition’s bold palette of saffron yellow, indigo violet, and earthy black is derived from natural pigments—each color chosen not for trend, but for what it evokes: vitality, spirit, and grounded wisdom.
Unlike mass-produced patchwork, this arrangement is conceptually and culturally intentional. In Kuba tradition, textile artistry reflects both the memory of the individual and the values of the community. Each square retains its visual autonomy while contributing to the overall harmony—mirroring the Kuba cosmological worldview, where unity is formed through difference.
Woven from raffia palm fibers on narrow looms by Kuba men and later embroidered by women of noble lineage, the textile is imbued with social power. These cloths were not decorative alone; they played ceremonial roles in funerals, coronations, and dowry exchanges. Under King Shyaam a-Mbul a-Ngwo in the 17th century, such textiles evolved into a symbolic language of governance and cultural pride.
Reimagined by NOA Living as a contemporary design object, this rare pillow becomes a tactile record of Kuba visual philosophy and regal identity. Ideal for curators, collectors, and interior designers who seek substance behind form, it is a museum-worthy object adapted for modern life—sophisticated, storied, and enduring.
