“Path of Ascent: Ekonda Botolo Hat with Seven Tiers and Chevron-Patterned Base”

Rising in seven gradually widening tiers, this elegant Botolo hat from the Ekonda people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo reflects the spiritual and social ascent of the nkumu (chief), while embracing visual cues from the natural world. Acquired in the early 1970s in Kinshasa from a young prince of a prominent family, this headdress is defined by its minimalist strength and the rhythmic geometry of its bold, chevron-patterned base.

The sacred number seven recurs throughout central African cosmology, often associated with the days of divine creation, life’s pivotal phases, and the complete spiritual journey. This headdress’s precise seven-tier structure mirrors the Ekonda belief in the layered universe—each level symbolizing a stage in the transformation from earthly leader to ancestral guide.

The fiber construction is coiled with masterful symmetry, devoid of brass ornamentation, highlighting instead the silhouette’s sculptural power. The dramatic base displays double-chevron motifs in warm ochre and umber—reminiscent of flowing river channels, energy waves, or the ripple of forest leaves in wind. These designs likely signify motion, continuity, and the chief’s dynamic connection to community and spirit realms.

Though less adorned than others in the collection, its refined elegance and harmonic form position this piece as a ceremonial object of great dignity—used perhaps in rites of transition, tribute, or oath-taking.

As Biebuyck and Van den Abbeele observe in The Power of Headdresses (1984), the significance of the Botolo lies not only in materiality, but in the encoded meanings of its structure. This example, with its upward path and grounded chevrons, offers a complete visual narrative of balance and ascension.
