Description
These Bushera pots are hand crafted by the Batwa People of the Republic of Burundi. They are rendered a special treatment as part of the (post-production) firing process to create a rich, black, identifiable surface. While aesthetically pleasing, they serve primarily as utilitarian They are designed to cook Bushera, a traditional, fermented cereal beverage. They are also employed to cook sauces, vegetables and meat. The process of preserving the structure and finishes of such pieces requires a deep knowledge of craft as transmitted through centuries via oral tradition. The Batwa people use natural materials such as clay and cow dung to create their pots, giving them a rustic, earthy appearance that is in keeping with the Batwa’s close connection to the land and nature.
