Description
This beautifully ornamented vessel is constructed of terra-cotta clay by the Nupe People from Nigeria. It is distinguished by a high degree of design embellishment that conjures an overall rhythmic appearance. Within the large, beveled lip are carved juxtapositions of several, distinct patterns, including vertical, striated lines followed respectively by wing and star-like shapes. The body of the vessel features a similar constellation of designs, with the addition of larger, angular patterns and smaller notches that function both aesthetically and as a grip mechanism while pouring or drinking. This pot is employed for consumption of local beer and wine in domestic contexts and during various cultural enactments.
